A Brief Overview of Microtia and Treatment Possibilities
Microtia is a congenital abnormality of the outer ear. The term “microtia” comes from the Latin words “micro”, which means small and “otia”, which means ear. Therefore also known as “Small Ear”.
This abnormality can range from mild structural issues to a completely missing external ear.
Usual Approaches
Method used in the early age of the client, before the reconstructive surgery is possible. Impacted ear is hidden under hair.
Prefabricated model of an ear is attached with a special glue directly on the skin. Used in cases where surgery cannot be performed.
Invasive surgical method either harvesting rib cartilage that is later used for ear reconstruction or using a special 3D tailor-made frame
